The Town of Nelson is the sixth largest in area of the 16 towns in Madison County. There are 54 named roads in the town making a total of 52 miles of roadway that the town maintains. The department consists of a Superintendent, an elected position with a term of two years. Presently, we have 5 employees who are appointed by the Superintendent, with the consent of the Town Board.

Town Highway Department:

  • Highway Superintendent,: Joseph Deyo
    Phone: 315-662-7942 -or- 315-447-0256
  • Deputy Highway Superintendent: Peter Spaulding

In the winter, in a mutual agreement with Madison County we plow and/or sand approximately 22.28 miles of county roads.

When bad weather is expected, the Highway Superintendent and Deputy Highway Supt., will also be checking the roads. Our goal is to attend to the roads promptly. Occasionally, mechanical breakdowns and severe weather conditions do slow us down.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT CARS SHOULD NOT BE PARKED ON ANY TOWN HIGHWAYS OR TURNAROUNDS FROM NOVEMBER 1 – APRIL30.
THIS IS A LAW; CARS PARKED OVER NIGHT ON ANY HIGHWAY IN THE TOWN OF NELSON CAN BE TOWED.

MAILBOX GUIDELINES: The Town Highway policy is not to replace or repair mailboxes damaged by the impact of snow when plowing or because of snow removal. The Town will consider repair/replacement if the mailbox assembly is located properly and damage occurred due to driver error.

To minimize the risk of danger: 1) The mailbox, including support arm, should have a minimum clearance of 41” above the road side shoulder, 2) The front of the mailbox should not extend beyond the edge of the shoulder. 3) The mailbox post should be a minimum of 16′ from the center of the road. 4) Mailbox should be clearly visible.

Mailboxes properly installed and maintained are generally not in conflict with snow and ice removal. Mailbox assembly shall not be constructed or installed in a manner that interferes with routine snow removal or in a manner, which clearly presents an unacceptable risk to snow removal operations or the traveling public.

A note about signs:

From time to time our road identification signs get stolen. There seems to be some popular ones that disappear more than others. Jones Road, Marris Road and Irish Hill Road are popular among the sign collectors. This is an annoying but also dangerous pursuit; not to the perpetrators but to the residents who live on the roads where the signs disappear. Yes, trying to tell your visitors and business people where you live and having to say that there is no road sign is one thing but what if the ambulance or fire truck can’t find your place when you’re having a crisis. Come on kids, if you want a road sign with your name on it, go to the local Highway Department and ask them to order one for you, at your expense.
